“Araw ng Pagbasa” Synchronized Reading Activity
Theme: Bumasa’t Umunlad
To promote the love for reading and to celebrate the diversity of learners and culture through reading, the Department of Education (DepEd) is spearheading the nationwide celebration of the 2019 National Reading Month this November.
In support to Republic Act 10556, an Act declaring every 27th day of November as “Araw ng Pagbasa”, a regular working holiday as declared by DEPED through the Bureau of Learning Delivery, this office conducted the National Celebration of “Araw ng Pagbasa” with the theme: Bumasa’t Umunlad through a Nationwide Synchronized Reading Activity different reading activities on November 27, 2019 at Josephine Resort in Kawit, Cavite.
The participants to this activity are the 200 learners from Kindergarten to Senior High School (100 learners in English and 100 in Filipino). The partakers to this activity are the 31 English and 30 Filipino teachers recommended by their School Heads/Departments together with the School Principals and the Division of Imus City Personnel.
"DepEd is initiating programs that would promote reading and literacy among the pupils and students, motivate our youth to learn from the lives and works of eminent Filipinos, uphold one's own heritage and values, and make reading a shared physical experience."
Anabu II Elementary School participants, the selected learners and teachers joined the National Celebration of the “Araw ng Pagbasa” and eagerly waited for the guest story teller. Before the story telling activity, the importance of the celebration was emphasized in a message given by the Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Galileo L. Go. He told everyone to keep on reading because reading brings you to places you have never been. Meet new people every time you turn the pages of your favorite book, also graced the event and gave an encouraging message to the pupils.
Afterwards, the story telling took place. The representative from the office of the Vice Mayor, named Mr. Rick Paredes and Mr. Galileo L. Go shared a story in very creative ways.
The keynote speaker from Marinduque State University, discussed the different techniques and strategies on how it must deliver or present the different kinds of activities such as Story Telling, Poem Recitation, Jazz Chants, Dramatic Choric Speaking, Readers Theater and etc.
The enthusiastic learner of Anabu II Elementary School, Andrei Camania volunteer to read interesting short story, “Ang Alamat ng Daliri” and gave ample time to read and ask simple questions about the story they have read. To upgrade the level of competency in their fluency in reading they have the collaborative activity to showcase their talents in reading through conveying messages and evaluate the progress of their reading skills.
The keynote speaker congratulated all learners, teachers, school personnel participated in the synchronized reading and gave her words of encouragement.
As quoted by Kate DiCamillo, Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It is should be offered as a gift.
